Description
While on a short visit to the Los Angeles area in August of 2014, I visited the Getty Villa located above Malibu, California. This is a view from the outer peristyle of a ancient Roman home built by the Gettys and modeled on the Villa dei Papiri, excavated from the ruins of c. 79 AD Herculaneum, with details from excavated homes of the period. The villa now houses the Getty collection of ancient Greek, Roman and Etrurian antiquities. The villa is a beautiful recreation of first century Roman architecture. The lovely gardens are planted with native Mediterranean species. Here is a view from one of the peristyle colonnades looking across the reflecting pool to the opposite colonnade with its wall frescos and Roman style benches. The support columns are Doric. Boxwood hedges surround a bay laurel tree with a grape arbor behind.
