Description
WHAT: This is a watercolor painting of a view of the Taos Pueblo in Taos, New Mexico. The stormy sky provided a nice backdrop for the mud and straw adobe structure. The Taos tribal members live in the communal structure as their ancestors did, without electric power or piped-in water.
WHEN: The reference photo was taken about 1990 in May. The painting was completed at the end of June, 2016.
WHERE: Taos, New Mexico
WHY: The subject of our art center's show was "Cowboys and Indians". I recalled I had a photo of the pueblo and looked a long time through a jumble of photos to find this view that I used as reference for my painting. The women are in charge of keeping up the surface of the adobe. One woman is working on a wall and another is testing the surface of an adobe wall nearby. One woman can be seen with a water jug.
