Description
Coit Tower, also known as Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a most famous landmark in Pioneer Park on Telegraph Hill, towering above the city of San Francisco, California. The tower has been said to be an evocation of the nozzle of a fire hose, but this is not true. The story stems from Lillian's lifelong interest in firefighters and firemen, and she was considered an honorary firefighter. Lillian Coit left the city of San Francisco a large bequest for beautification. It was decided that a memorial to Lillian Coit would be an appropriate use of part of the funds. The tower was designed the architect Arthur Brown, Jr. in the Art Deco style. The 210 foot tower was completed in 1933. Within the tower are a number of murals painted by various artists of the time. This shot was taken at sunset from the window of a restaurant in Chinatown. The way the light glints off the multicolored buildings makes this cityscape pop.
