Description
This is a photo of one of the ancient artifacts at the Getty Villa near Santa Monica, California. Originally conceived as a recreation of a Roman home for the use of the Getty family, the villa is now a museum of ancient art and sculpture collected by the Gettys. This is a Roman sarcophagus dated between 290 and 300 AD. It is decorated with sculpture depicting a vindemia festival with cupids collecting the grape harvest and stomping on the grapes to release the juice soon to become wine that flows from the lion head urns. Vintage scenes were used to symbolize rebirth and fertility and were common scenes for sarcophagi.
