Mary Mother of Mercy Icon - Jubilee Year of Mercy
Artist
Michele Myers
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas Board
Description
This icon was created to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy that started on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, 2015 and will end November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. This extraordinary jubilee year will focus on God's forgiveness and mercy and was announced by Pope Francis. Mary offers us her son, Jesus, in a circle symbolizing eternity. Jesus raises his hands in blessing and their position against the cross foreshadows his Passion. The starry background symbolizes the universe. Mary and Jesus are surrounded by the four-winged cherubim. Mary crushes the head of the snake, symbolizing Satan or evil. The writing is Greek for "Mary" and "of mercy".
