Description
I was inspired to do this painting by the words of Psalm 137, Vs. 1-6:
By the rivers of Babylon,
there we sat down and there we wept
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the poplars there
we hung up our harps.
3 For there our captors
asked us for songs,
and our tormentors asked for mirth, saying,
"Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
4 How could we sing the Lord's song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand wither!
6 Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
above my highest joy.
I tried to express the emotionality of this psalm using color and brushstrokes. The psalm expresses so well the anguish the early Jewish people felt about their captivity by the Babylonians and their thoughtless demand to entertain them with Israel's songs, among the other indignities the Jews had to bear. The psalm also provides a metaphor for our exile in the worldly present day "Babylon" while we long to enter our heavenly home. The image is a reflection on the plight of conquered people, those suffering human slavery, and those exiled from their homeland.

What a marvelous and spiritually moving work to commemorate a time when the Jewish people were exiled from their homeland and were taken captive and forced to sing when their hearts must have been breaking! Their cruel captors of Babylon mocked them and made them long even more for their homeland! That is why they wipe their eyes here and weep bitterly for the loss of all they once knew! Their harps that were once played upon joyously have been hung up in the trees here in this work! Love your interpretation and composition! Fave! L/F!
