Description
While touring the southeast coastline of Oahu, Hawaii, in August 2013, I took a shot of this idyllic beach, Makapuu or Kaupo Beach Park. There are two islands just offshore. Manana is the larger island, popularly known as Rabbit Island. In the late 1880's, John Cummins, the first owner of Waimanalo Plantation, released rabbits on the island and a colony of them survived for many years. The last of the rabbits were removed in the early 1970s. The Hawaiian name, Manana, means to stretch out or to protrude. Kaohika’ipu, or Black Rock, is the smaller island right next to Manana.
